  • Udyam registration (MSME)

    Owned by: Whoever holds the Operations & Money role

    Free, online, and takes about fifteen minutes with an Aadhaar number. It is not compulsory to trade, but a current-account opening, a GeM listing or a corporate client’s vendor form will all ask for it, and getting it after a client asks costs you the client.

  • GST registration

    Owned by: Whoever holds the Operations & Money role

    Required once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh a year for goods or ₹20 lakh for services — thresholds most first-year crews stay well under. Register earlier if you want to bill corporate clients, because their procurement will usually not raise a purchase order without a GSTIN.

  • GHMC trade licence

    Owned by: Whoever holds the Operations & Money role

    Applies to anyone trading from a commercial premises inside Greater Hyderabad. A crew working from a member’s home kitchen or a client’s basement usually does not need one; a crew that rents a unit does. Confirm against your specific address before you sign a rental agreement, not after.

  • Shops & Establishments registration (Telangana)

    Owned by: Whoever holds the Operations & Money role

    Required within 30 days of opening a commercial establishment with employees. A revenue-sharing crew with no employees is a different arrangement, but the moment you pay someone a wage rather than a share, this applies to you.

  • FSSAI registration

    Owned by: Whoever holds the Kitchen or Food Safety role

    Anything involving food needs it, including a home kitchen. The Basic registration covers turnover up to ₹12 lakh a year and costs ₹100 per year. Cook without it and one complaint ends the business.

Do I need to register a company before I start?
No. Most first-year crews trade as a partnership of individuals with a written agreement about who does what and who earns what. What you do need early is a shared account for the business money and a record of every rupee in and out. Register a formal entity when a client, a bank or the tax thresholds make you — not before, because an unused entity still costs filings.
How much money do I need to start?
Between roughly ₹18,000 and ₹1,50,000 depending on which of the eight businesses you pick, and that is the total split across the whole team rather than per person. The thrift store starts cheapest; a cloud kitchen is the most expensive because it needs a commercial space. Every guide lists the individual line items so you can see what is genuinely required and what is a nice-to-have.
What if my teammates stop turning up?
This is the failure that ends most small crews, which is why everyone joins on a trial with agreed deliverables and an end date before they become a member, and why the revenue split is signed in writing before there is money to argue about. A share of revenue also means someone who stops working stops earning, without anyone having to have that conversation.
Can I do this alongside a job?
Some of these, yes. Tutoring, thrift retail and weekend event or photography work are built around evenings and weekends. A tiffin service or a cloud kitchen is not — someone has to be in the kitchen at 6 am on a Tuesday. Is this only for Hyderabad?
